Here’s an ancient-and-modern shot:
- [Foreground] The Royal Fusiliers City of London Regiment Memorial
- [Centre] City Temple Church
- [Background right] Four spires of St Sepulchre without Newgate
- [Background left] SwissRe Building (“Gherkin”)
One item of interest is the date range on the monument – 1914 to 1919. Most people regard WW1 as ending on 11th November, 1918 as Turkey, Austria-Hungary and finally Germany conclude armistice negotiations but that was just when the fighting stopped. The official end to the Great War didn’t happen until 28th June, 1919 when the Treaty of Versailles was signed.
