Highlights of the Christmas Day roast

A nice, simple affair – the three Breakwells plus my father-in-law – so not too much to make.

  1. The starter was going to be “Peach, Stilton and Parma ham wraps” but the peaches we bought were ones that take time to ripen and so were rock-hard and inedible. Maybe next time. (We had a backup starter)
  2. If you want the best stuffing in the world, you need to give Nigella a try – her “Gingerbread Stuffing” recipe produced excellent results. Sainsbury’s had some small loaves which were really useful as the recipe needed scaling down a lot. Guests will need to become accustomed to this stuffing as I intend to use it whenever possible.
  3. All the food was ready at the same time and nothing was left hidden away at the back of the oven to be found later. I did, though, neglect to cook any carrots but the turkey, sausages, potatoes, parsnips, peas, broad beans, broccoli and sprouts made up for that.
  4. Cue my favourite Christmas song – “Christmas Wrapping” by The Waitresses:
I said, “Me too, but why are you?
You mean you forgot cranberries too?”
Yes, the jar remains unopened in the cupboard again; it’s now reached it’s BBE date so I’ll try to use it in something else soon.
