Reading Festival–even the buses are trying to rip you off

Reading Buses have laid on a service for festival goers to help them get from the station to the festival site. According to their website:

A big welcome to all Festival goers, whether Reading residents or from further afield, we are here to take you to and from the Festival site quickly, safely and cheaply!

This is not true as the buses just go to the Moderation pub on Caversham Road and back again. If I was generous, I’d say that was a distance of 500 yards (with a further 300 yards to walk to the actual site entrance) – for the price of £1.

Admittedly, the minimum adult fare on Reading Buses is £1.80  but that’s also the maximum too for one trip of any distance. After the Friday festival, I caught a taxi home from the station – 4.3 miles for £12. The taxi was way cheaper per mile than the bus!

I think they’re relying on the ignorance of new arrivals as to the actual distance involved. Be interesting to know how many people caught the 98 bus more than once.
