Local History update

May last year, I posted about an old painted sign on the side of building that I passed on the way to and from work every day.

Last week, a granddaughter of William Fisher found the post whilst doing some family history tracing and emailed me.

William Fisher was my paternal grandfather. He became a coal merchant between 1883-7 and came from humble roots in the Hillgreen / Leckhampstead area. He continued in business until his death in 1915 and was buried in Caversham.

For budding toponymists out there, Leckhampstead is Old English for “homestead where leeks are grown”.
